Phone Settings

If your Cove mobile pass isn't unlocking a door you have access to, the cause is usually one of the phone settings below. Work through them in order.

1. Check the Access tab
Open the Cove app and go to Access. If setup isn't complete, follow the in-app steps. When it's done you'll see All Set Up.

2. Turn Bluetooth on
Bluetooth must be on to communicate with the reader. Airplane mode and battery-saver modes can switch it off without warning.

3. Set Location to Always
This one matters more than people expect. While Using the App means the pass only works with the app open on screen. Always lets you unlock by approaching the reader with your phone in your pocket. If your pass works when the app is open but not when it's closed, this is why.

4. Update the app
Older versions can fail to register the pass.

5. Restart your phone
A full restart resolves a surprising share of cases, particularly after switching phones or updating iOS.

6. Reinstall the app
If you've done everything above, delete the app, reinstall it, and sign in with the same email address on your Cove account.

Still not working? Stop here — it isn't your phone.
If the Access tab shows All Set Up and you've completed the steps above, the problem is on the building's access control side, not your device. Continuing to reinstall won't help.

Contact your property management team and ask them to check your credential in the building's access control system. If they need Cove's help, have them send us:

  • Site and the specific door, turnstile or elevator
  • The date and time of your most recent failed attempt
  • Whether it fails at every reader or just one
  • What the Access tab shows
  • Phone model, OS version, and Cove app version
